Artist Statement

As a potter, my passion is to create art for the every-day use. In a world of mass production and artificial components, a piece of pottery made by one person is an endeavor to nourish human connection. I specialize in a surface design called “sgraffito” – an Italian word that means “scratching.” By carving a unique design in semi-hard clay, a surface is created that calls to be touched.

My work is both wheel-thrown, and hand-built. All functional pieces are fired to cone 6 and food safe. I have been blessed to learn the art of pottery from local studio instructors. I cherish these individuals who have spoken into my craft and guided my way. These days, we live on some mountain acres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado. My little red barn-turned-studio is a haven.

Sgraffito is the Italian wood for "scratching."
My designs are carved through black underglaze on wet clay.  The result is a highly textured surface that gives the impression of a woodcut carving on clay -- visually and texturally pleasing.
